The Deaf Education program has two main faculty members, Dr. Sharon Baker and Jessica Scott.
Dr. Baker is the head of the program and has extensive experience in Deaf Education, as a teacher as well as an administrator. She frequently works with colleagues at Gallaudet University and the NSF funded Visual Language, Visual Learning (VL2) programs. Much of her work centers around language development through signed and written modalities among deaf and hard of hearing children.
Jessica Scott has worked as a classroom teacher for deaf and hard of hearing students at the high school level, and has also worked as a reading specialist for deaf students in grades K-8. She is a licensed reading specialist, as well as certified in deaf education and teaching English language learners. She is especially interested in the literacy development of signing deaf children and the relationship between American Sign Language proficiency and English literacy. She is currently completing her doctorate at Harvard University.
